The baseline: how much CO₂ does a car journey emit?

The average passenger car emits approximately 170g of CO₂ per kilometre in real-world conditions — higher in city traffic due to stop-start driving. A 6km car journey in Berlin produces roughly 1.02kg of CO₂.

What cycling produces

A bicycle produces zero direct emissions. The only CO₂ associated with cycling is the production of the bicycle itself — amortised over its lifetime, this works out to approximately 5g of CO₂ per kilometre, compared to a car's 170g. In practice, cycling is effectively zero-emission transport.

If you cycle 6km each way to work (12km per day) on 230 working days per year, you're covering 2,760km annually. Against an equivalent car journey, that avoids approximately 450kg of CO₂ — nearly half a tonne per person, per year.
