The Best Cycling Routes in Berlin for Commuters

Berlin is flat, well-connected, and increasingly well-equipped for cycling. But not all routes are equal. Some are fast and direct. Some are scenic. Some are just better than Google Maps tells you. Here are the routes we use and recommend.

Prenzlauer Berg → Mitte (3.5km, 12 min)

Head down Schönhauser Allee onto the protected cycle lane, then cut through Zionskirchplatz and along Rosenthaler Straße into the heart of Mitte. Flat the entire way. One of the highest cycling modal share routes in the city. Fast, direct, and enjoyable even in rush hour.

Kreuzberg → Mitte (4km, 15 min)

From anywhere in Kreuzberg, Mehringdamm takes you north into Tempelhof. From there, follow the cycle path across Checkpoint Charlie and up Friedrichstraße. Alternatively, cut through Oranienstraße and Moritzplatz for a slightly longer but quieter route through one of Berlin's most vibrant cycling neighbourhoods.

Neukölln → Tempelhof (2.5km, 9 min)

Karl-Marx-Straße has a dedicated cycle lane the full length. Head north and you're at the entrance to Tempelhofer Feld in under 10 minutes. The Feld itself has a 6km circuit — perfect for a post-commute lap before heading home.

Charlottenburg → Tiergarten → Mitte (6km, 20 min)

The Tiergarten route is one of Berlin's most beautiful commutes. Enter from Straße des 17. Juni, follow the path through the park, exit at the Brandenburg Gate, and you're in Mitte. Zero traffic, dedicated path, and one of the best views in the city every morning.

Spandau → Mitte (18km, 55 min)

A longer commute, but the Spree cycle path is almost entirely car-free and flat. Follow the river from Spandau through Charlottenburg and into Mitte. This is a legitimately enjoyable commute — many riders do it daily and prefer it to the S-Bahn.
